Introduction
Thiophanate-methyl is an effective and widely used fungicide for the control of numerous plant pathogenic fungi. Due to its unique properties and combined protective and curative activity, it plays an important role in improving crop performance and increasing agricultural productivity.
What Is Thiophanate-methyl?
Thiophanate-methyl is a fungicide belonging to the benzimidazole group, exhibiting both preventive and curative action. It can be absorbed through roots and foliage and acts as a systemic fungicide with contact activity, making it suitable for controlling a wide range of plant diseases in various crops.
After absorption, the fungicide is translocated systemically through the xylem vessels and distributed throughout the plant, providing effective protection and treatment against many fungal pathogens. Thiophanate-methyl not only prevents disease development but also contributes significantly to the control and treatment of existing fungal infections.
Directions for Use
Crop Disease Application Rate
Wheat Covered and loose smut 150 g per 100 kg seed
Fruit trees Apple scab, pear scab, pear white spot, brown rot of peach, powdery mildew (temperate fruit trees) 0.5–0.6 kg per 1000 L water
Fruit trees White root rot (soil drench near trunk collar) 50–60 g per 50 L water
Use strictly according to the above recommendations. Proper application and compliance with instructions are the responsibility of the user.
Timing of Application
The optimal application timing varies depending on the crop and disease. Best results are achieved when symptoms first appear, allowing rapid and effective disease control. Additionally, Thiophanate-methyl can be used as a seed treatment before planting, helping to prevent root rot and other soil-borne fungal problems.
Tank Mixing
Thiophanate-methyl shows incompatibility with most EC-formulated pesticides. If tank mixing is required, a compatibility (jar) test is strongly recommended prior to application. Always consult plant protection experts before mixing with other agrochemicals.
Mode of Action
Thiophanate-methyl inhibits beta-tubulin synthesis in fungal cells, disrupting cell division and preventing fungal growth and spread.
Toxicological Information
Acute oral LD₅₀ (male rats): 6640 mg/kg (a.i.)
WHO Hazard Classification: U (Unlikely to present acute hazard)
Thiophanate-methyl and Honey Bees
This fungicide is highly toxic to honey bees, fish, and other aquatic organisms. Avoid application during flowering and pollination periods. Use with extreme caution near rivers, streams, and water bodies.
Pre-Harvest Interval (PHI)
The pre-harvest interval varies by crop. For apples, the PHI ranges from 7 to 14 days between the final application and harvest.
Antidote
There is no specific antidote. Treatment is symptomatic. In case of poisoning, seek medical attention immediately and provide the product label to the physician.
Safety Precautions During Application
Wear protective clothing including workwear, hat, goggles, mask, impermeable gloves, and boots during spraying. Smoking during application is strictly prohibited. After spraying, wash work clothes thoroughly and take a shower. Avoid disposing of pesticide residues in natural environments or water sources.
Storage Conditions and Precautions
Store the product in its original packaging, away from food, feed, children, and animals, in locked storage areas protected from sunlight and moisture. Recommended storage temperature is 10–35°C. Once the seal is broken, product shelf life may decrease. Do not store diluted spray solutions.
Directions for Preparation and Application
Select and properly calibrate a suitable sprayer. Clean the tank thoroughly and fill it halfway or three-quarters with clean water. Dissolve the recommended amount of fungicide in a separate container, then slowly add it to the spray tank while agitation is running. Add the remaining water to reach the desired volume. Use the prepared spray solution within a few hours and apply evenly to the target plants.
Application Management
Incompatible with most EC-formulated pesticides.
Avoid spraying crops under stress conditions such as cold, drought, or nutrient deficiency.
May cause dark spotting on some greenhouse crops and fruits.
Avoid application during hot hours or windy conditions.
Use clear, low-salinity water for spraying.
Rotate with fungicides from different chemical groups to prevent resistance development.
Product Authenticity
All imported pesticides of Yas Andishan Sarir Sepehr are distributed nationwide exclusively through Afra Farazin Rahavard.
Important Notes
Application of Thiophanate-methyl is permitted only with a prescription from a certified plant protection specialist and strictly for the uses described above. Excessive or improper use of pesticides poses serious risks to human health and the environment. Although fungicides are essential for disease control and crop protection, misuse can cause long-term ecological damage. Therefore, Thiophanate-methyl must be applied responsibly and in accordance with official guidelines issued by national plant protection authorities.
